Redruth Youth Council

Redruth’s Youth Council gives young people aged 10 to 18 who live in, or attend school in, Redruth the opportunity to have their voices heard on issues that affect them locally. The Youth Council works alongside Redruth Town Council to share young people’s views, ideas, and priorities, helping to shape decisions about the town.

Redruth’s Youth Council is the youth section of Redruth Town Council. We work with councillors and officers to represent the views of young people in Redruth and to raise issues that matter to us.

We have contributed to discussions on topics including:

  • Play facilities in Redruth
  • Recycling provision in the town centre
  • Young people’s experiences of public spaces

Our work often involves carrying out research, running surveys, and presenting our findings directly to the Town Council, along with recommendations on how issues could be addressed.

We have also met with the Mayor to learn more about the role and its impact on the town.

In the past, we have taken part in many of the town’s festivals and community events. These have included giving out mince pies with the Mayor in the run-up to Christmas and running activities such as snail racing, a traditional Cornish event. At these events, we also carried out surveys to better understand the opinions of people living in Redruth.

We have taken part in trips to learn more about how government works. In 2017, we visited the Houses of Parliament and spoke with George Eustice, our local MP at the time, and Tom Watson, then MP for West Bromwich East. We also attended sessions on historical political movements and key political issues.

This experience helped us understand how national and local government structures work and supported us in learning how to run meetings and discussions in a formal and effective way.

Get Involved in the Youth Council

If you would like to get involved, we meet monthly in the Redruth Civic Centre, and often attend the town’s events. We have a Facebook account where we post updates after each of meetings, or when something important happens.
